Pattaya Car Hire: What Do Excess, Deposit and Desk Charges Mean?
Updated October 25, 2026 · 5 min read
Choose the offer whose deposit, excess and fuel policy you can live with, not simply the lowest headline price. The exact amounts depend on the supplier, vehicle and dates, so this article deliberately gives no invented Pattaya figure. Open the rental conditions before paying, then compare Pattaya cars and their terms.
Excess and CDW are not the deposit
The excess is the maximum part of covered damage for which the rental agreement can make you responsible. CDW limits certain damage liability, but it is not a promise that every panel, tyre, window, key or incident is covered. Read the exclusions and the procedure after damage.
The security deposit is different. It is normally an amount temporarily blocked on the main driver’s card at collection. Buying separate full protection does not necessarily remove that block: the rental firm still applies its own agreement, and a reimbursement product generally means you first pay an eligible charge and claim it back afterwards. Check whose name must be on the card, whether debit cards qualify and how much available credit is required.
What can appear at the counter
Common decision points include an additional driver, child seat, young-driver condition, cross-border restriction, late collection and an upgrade. None has one universal Pattaya price. Add only what your booking confirmation does not already include, and ask for any change in writing before signing. Photograph every side of the car, the wheels, glass, fuel gauge and mileage while it is still at the collection point.
Age rules are supplier-specific. A valid licence alone does not prove that a particular company will rent a particular category to you. Check minimum age, how long the licence must have been held and whether a young-driver surcharge applies. Thailand also requires visiting drivers to hold a licence valid there; for many non-ASEAN visitors this means the appropriate international driving permit alongside the domestic licence.
Fuel and return
Full-to-full is easy to understand: collect full, refill near the return point and retain the receipt. Other policies may require returning the same level or paying in advance. The rule printed in your booking confirmation controls the transaction. Ask staff to record any mismatch before leaving, and photograph the gauge again when returning the vehicle.
Allow time for the final inspection and keep the signed return document. If the branch is closed, follow its key-drop and photo instructions rather than improvising. The best Pattaya deal is the one you can collect without an unwanted insurance decision under pressure and return with evidence of its condition. Review current rental conditions before booking.
